JAMES REEVE

Project Info:

These images were shot in 1998 when I was still working as a photographers assistant. I had travelled to New York with a fashion photographer to shoot a fashion story at a rodeo in Brooklyn. Alongside being an assistant I also took the opportunity to take a series of my own images, on my trusted Contax T2 camera.

I was experimenting at this time with a style of 'no look' photography, which involved taking the shot without looking through the viewfinder. This of course gave no guarantee of a perfectly composed image but allowed me to experiment with unusual angles, see shots 3 & 10.

The Federation of Black Cowboys was set-up in 1994 at the Cedar Lane Stables in New York City's Howard Beach.

It is a non-profit making organisation that works to raise awareness of the forgotten black cowboys, the unsung heroes of the old west who played an important part in the history of America.
